Has debate gone to shit?

i have left other messageboards due to personal attacks.

at one time i belonged to storm2k, which had a politics board. i was one of the few liberals there. instead of coming back with facts to my comments, instead i would get called 'liberal lemming' as starters. so i quit. i heard there were a few comments about that too.

but i always welcome a good debate, one where it is over an issue not personalities.

Agreed. I love how people think they're so tough online. I'd like to see one fight like that IRL; he/she would be beaten to a pulp.

If you're personally attacking someone you don't agree with, you have just lost the debate. Debating is about responding with facts and sources.

Yes and no. If all you have to argue with is ad hominems, yeah, you've lost. But if you tack a personal attack on the end of a powerful argument just to hit 'em while they're down - well, you still have a powerful argument.

Personal attacks are just plain not very nice, but they don't add or subtract from arguments that have been made.

Well, in my opinion, it just makes the other person look weak if they are resorting to insults. Furthermore, I feel the same way about people who think that if they yell the loudest, it adds to their viewpoint.

Good analogy, and I think there's something to that. If nothing else, I'm rather less likely to take a person seriously if they are using personal attacks.
